Health and Wellness Goals Inspire DNE to Adopt 4-Day Work Week

Leading North American energy management firm implements shortened work week, providing greater work-life balance for team members.

Since its founding in 2009, DNE has quickly become a leading energy management company. They specialize in assisting companies in the United States and Canada to implement strategies to optimize their energy expenditures and consumption while working towards their carbon neutrality goals. At DNE, providing for their team members is just as crucial to the company as doing the right thing for their clients. To cut back on the time employees are on the clock and allow them more time with friends and family, DNE moved to a 4-day workweek schedule as of July 1, 2023.

Co-founders of DNE, Wayne Burke and Steve Shoiry, believe that making money and doing good are not mutually exclusive ideas. For over a decade, business practices at their energy consulting firm have reflected their dedication to caring for their team members. In 2015, the company became Great Place to Work-Certified TM in Canada. They have maintained this recognition yearly since and continue to honor it by maintaining a positive work environment and increasing paid vacation time.

Speaking of the change Steve Shoiry, co-founder and CRO of DNE, remarked, “The wonderful team members at DNE are assuredly our most valuable resource. Being mindful of the demands we place on the time they spend at work and promoting a healthier work-life balance is the goal of this initiative. As we show appreciation and respect for their time, we believe they will do the same giving their best in everything they do. It will be a win-win for all.”

While many businesses moving to 4-day work weeks still require employees to work 40 hours per week, DNE is taking a markedly different approach. Removing one day from each week will not come with an expectation to work longer hours every other day of the week. Executives at DNE believe that allowing team members more time to recuperate each week and take care of personal and family responsibilities will enable them to be more productive at work. Their trial of this new schedule over the next six months will determine if team members can accomplish the same work in less time.

“Some might see this change as an opportunity to cut operating costs by cutting hours,” stated Shoiry. “That’s not the goal. Shortening the work week is not a way to cut salaries or benefits. We will be successful if we can accomplish 100% of what we did before in 80% of the time. Time is a limited resource, and giving some of it back to our people is one of the greatest ways we can thank them for all they do.”

DNE provides energy solutions for businesses in various industries. Their commercial energy consultants assist clients in identifying and implementing strategies to reduce their carbon footprint, lower energy costs, and improve their procurement. DNE’s close relationships with energy suppliers allow them to negotiate the best prices and terms for each client.
