The Next Banksy will be Russian – Moscow-based artists burst onto the runway at Futurum Moscow

Industry: Fashion & Accessories

At the recent Futurum Moscow (a part of the ongoing series of fashion events by Russian Fashion Council and the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development of the city of Moscow) not only fashion was at the forefront - that honor also went to several prominent Russian street artists, who were given the opportunity to show off their talent and skill in an impromptu live-streamed virtual performance.

Watched by over a million viewers from around the world, graffiti artists J. Mars, Andrey Aznet and Sasha RTS (working under the name Risui Tusui) painted the walls of the Mosgormash building, where the event took place this fashion season. All of these young artists are from Moscow, representing the skill and genius necessary to blend their particular art styles into what was previously just a fashion event.

“The catwalk was established right at the venue of the city’s Mosgormash Technopark. 13 emerging Moscow-based designers were able to participate in the exhibition free of charge and present their collections. Moreover, Moscow artists have showcased their projects in various genres,” reported Alexei Fursin, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development of the city of Moscow.

Sasha RTS, Andrey Aznet and Misha Vert made some unique VR-based works: inspired by the collections presented by the Moscow fashion designers, the artists made some digital paintings in Virtual Reality. In their turn, artists Alexey Novikov, Maxim Karadutov, and Egor Karpenko created a unique work of art – Object #04-0.02, a light installation with many differently sized squares, which was available right during the shows. Sound design for the livestream was made by Artificial Intelligence from MUBERT Team. Visual effects for the videos on the stream were designed by Stanislav Glazov, a digital artist.

The show by Denis Byvaltsev was also composed of the creation of an artwork: in the center of the runway, the artist did his magic. One of the looks was associated with Soviet painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin’s work, and another featured a large-scale print with Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.

“This year, Futurum Moscow has been high-tech, cutting-edge, and advanced. Even in the no-visitor mode, the new phygital format of the event made the audience feel the emotions we’ve all been lacking – this is confirmed with the numbers of views,” said Alexander Shumsky, President of Russian Fashion Council.

The blending of the worlds of art and fashion comes as a natural progression from Futurum Moscow, which was launched in 2017 as a cutting edge event for emerging fashion designers, fashion heroes of the future.

A brave and uncompromising vision of that future could be seen at the Futurum Moscow event this October – a physical space that successfully blended and combined the media of virtual and digital art, street art and fashion. With 2020 bringing us to many challenging questions in regards to where the fashion industry is going, it is up to fashion weeks to evolve with the times, allowing artists such as the ones that were on display in Futurum Moscow to take center stage and breathe new life into the industry.
