The UK publishing industry has a shortage of black authors, along with black lead characters who deliver empowering messages to children. Author Colleen Dixon is stepping up to challenge this dynamic with her debut kid’s book “Coco Loves Her Curly Hair”. “Coco Loves Her Curly Hair” aims to encourage young black children to be unapologetically themselves. The story celebrates diversity through Coco, a beautiful little girl who celebrates her natural hair and embraces her cultural differences. Clearly, the book delivers a message that needs to be heard, loudly and often. Dixon hopes to empower young readers to be comfortable in their own skin and to reject racism and discrimination. A very timely message considering world events.

“2020 has been a year of reflection and awareness for the black community,” commented the clearly passionate Dixon. “The unjust killing of George Floyd is just one of many situations that people of colour face every day and these inequalities exist on multiple levels, including literature. Inclusive books are needed more than ever as young people must have positive role models to feel welcomed into the world of reading and wider society. Creating diverse bookshelves and libraries also creates inclusiveness between races, helping children of all colours understand each other and learn about the cultures around them. Now is the time for a change. I hope my new books help create that change!”

According to Dixon, “Coco Loves Her Curly Hair” drives home the message to young readers to love and accept themselves without apology. It is also intended to show authors that self-publishing offers a way to escape the racist elements in the “traditional” publishing industry that has often robbed black authors and artists of expressing themselves to their community and the world.

In addition to helping young children of all cultures celebrate the beauty and versatility of afro-textured hair, it also teaches about the days of the week, in a fun and compelling way.

“Coco Loves Her Curly Hair” is the first book in The Little Coco Series which will build around the subjects of self-love, self-acceptance, inclusion and difference, in ways that kids understand and leaves them empowered.
