Epidemiologist Kate Johnson was deep into finishing her dissertation for her PhD in 2019 creating mathematical models to predict diseases when she began longing for an escape from the strict protocols of her research. The political and physical violence of the last several years in the United States reminded her of ancient Rome. Crafting strong fictional characters who epitomized the divided loyalties and brutal conflicts of that era proved just the creative outlet she craved.
As Covid-19 forced her into isolation in Seattle, she realized another long-held desire, to become a mother. In February 2021 she gave birth to a healthy boy, and her debut novel, Daughter of Carthage, Son of Rome will be published on April 23, 2021.
