As the world continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists from around the globe scramble to develop effective treatments and a vaccine. Meanwhile, much has been and is yet to be learned about the intricacies of this virus, including how it is spread (and not spread). Emerging scientific evidence can help us determine the best ways to reduce risk as well as relieve unnecessary anxiety and fear. Fear of the unknown drives much of the excessive worry that prevails today.
In this short, easily understandable book, epidemiologist and award-winning author Daniel Halperin takes a calm, rational approach to examining 12 common myths and 12 lesser known facts about Covid-19. “Facing COVID Without Panic” is a fascinating eye-opener that will help set the record straight and relieve much of the current anxiety due to misleading, exaggerated, or conflicting information circulating on the internet and in the news media.
In early June of 2020, while finalizing a scientific article for a respected public health journal, some colleagues urged Daniel to prepare a more accessible version suitable for a wider audience. In particular, many people seem anxious and uncertain about which measures will best protect themselves from the coronavirus (and which ones may be unnecessary). To shed light on these questions, he eventually agreed with his colleagues’ suggestion, and this concise book is the result.
During a recent interview, Dr. Halperin commented, “This review of the existing and yes, ever-changing, evidence attempts to synthesize and present the best available data – and apparent myths – regarding the novel coronavirus and the global pandemic it has unleashed. All of us understandably are fearful or at least seriously concerned. This careful examination of the scientific evidence can provide practical suggestions for lowering the risk of illness and death and help to alleviate anxiety and fear.”
When asked how this rigorous yet somewhat “alternative” analysis has affected his own life, Halperin mentioned: “Well, I have been reassuring my previously energetic 91-year-old mother in California and my 88-year-old mother-in-law in Madrid that they can, and indeed should, resume enjoying daily walks and (with care) socializing.”
He went on to explain, based on a rigorous analysis of the available scientific evidence, the need to “strategically prioritize how best to prevent severe illness and death than to continue our overwhelming focus on attempting to somehow stamp out all new Covid-19 infections.”

About Daniel Halperin
Daniel Halperin, Ph.D. is Adjunct Full Professor at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill. He has conducted epidemiological and anthropological research for over forty years in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and other regions, and previously taught at Harvard School of Public Health, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. He served over five years as Senior HIV Prevention Advisor at the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. Halperin co-authored a New York Times “Editor’s Choice” book on the AIDS pandemic and has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles on infectious diseases in leading scientific journals, as well as a number of opinion pieces in the Washington Post, New York Times, Financial Times, and elsewhere.
