Howard Healthcare Academy—a history-making dental education program created by pediatric dentistry leader Dr. Kami Hoss, DDS, of The Super Dentists—recently received accreditation from the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education, or COE.

Dr. Hoss, the co-founder of The Super Dentists, said he created Howard Healthcare Academy—San Diego’s only dental technical education school—after recognizing the need for dental assistants who were highly trained. In fact, the demand for well-trained assistants became even more apparent to him as his practice, The Super Dentists, grew. That is when Dr. Hoss and his highly skilled team embarked on the process of reinventing and transforming the dental assistant education experience, and his training program was born.

Howard Healthcare Academy was granted accreditation because Dr. Hoss successfully demonstrated that the academy meets the commission’s quality standards. According to the COE, the institution also meets its employers’ and students’ needs, as well as the San Diego community’s needs.

The COE’s evaluation process included a self-study that the academy began in November of 2019. In addition, professional instructors representing COE member institutions (the commission has 500-plus institutional members total) from other parts of the country visited the academy to conduct an in-depth review of it. The visit took place in February of 2021

Dr. Hoss said he was excited for Howard Healthcare Academy to earn accreditation, especially with dental assisting being an in-demand career field at the moment. In fact, the industry is expected to experience growth in the double digits in California during the next few years, according to Dr. Hoss. Per the United States Bureau of Labor, the field is slated to grow 11% from 2018 to 2028—a rate higher than that of several other industries.

“We’ve already begun the application process to receive federal and state funding, which, in turn, will help more students finance their career in dental assisting,” Dr. Kami Hoss, DDS, said.
