Kansas City, KS (PRUnderground) October 27th, 2018

It’s summertime on Chicago’s Southside, and Caleb has it made. He’s about to start high school, his mom got him and his sister out of government housing, and his best friend, D, has their future all planned. But when a dead dog turns up in a dumpster, and the local gangs start recruiting, the neighborhood transforms into a forest of monsters overnight. If Caleb wants to make it through the summer, he’ll need to find a voice of his own.

Without A Fight is the debut Young Adult novel by Annie Goodson. A Kansas native, Goodson spend five years living, writing and teaching in Chicago, where she drew inspiration for the characters in this story. A graduate of Kansas State University and Loyola University Chicago, Goodson studied at The Second City Writing Program and Conservatory, and is a former writer for NPR’s Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!. She co-founded Mass St. Productions, a sketch comedy ensemble still producing works in Chicago. She has performed in the Detroit, Chicago, Twin Cities, and Kansas City, and is a two-time recipient of a Second City Works By Women Festival award. Currently, she lives and teaches in Kansas City.

While Without A Fight deals with topics ripped from the headlines, like police and gang violence, racism, the cyclical nature of poverty and abuse, Annie has high hopes for her readers. “In our polarizing society, young people often find themselves defined by the stereotypes other people place on them. I want my book to help them imagine, through the power of friendship, the power they have to decide who they are, and who they want to be, and the impact they can have on their community.”

Copies of Without a Fight are available at all major booksellers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Black Rose Writing.
