Kassa Studios Debuts the 1st Chapter of the Coming of Age / Superhero Series, Zion #1!

From Kassa Studios, Zion #1 is the comic book debut of artist and writer Fasil Kassa, of Kassa Studios. Zion is a limited comic book series set in mid-2000’s Atlanta and follows the journey of Desta, the son of Ethiopian immigrants, who fled to the US in the 1980’s to escape the Ethiopian Civil War. We learn six months prior to the start of the story that Desta dropped out of engineering school, unable to deal with the pressure from his family to succeed. He struggles to reconcile with his estranged family while supporting himself as a grocery store clerk.

One night, Desta finds an old family heirloom which leads him to the Zion Gem, an object forged from energy imbued in the legendary Ark of the Covenant, one of the most sought-after artifacts in human history. The Zion Gem was used by the ancient rulers of the Solomonic Dynasty to protect Ethiopia for thousands of years before it mysterious vanished in 1914 during a battle between King Iyasu V and an immortal being, known as the Dark Hyena. Desta learns that he is a direct descendant of Iyasu V, the last wielder of the Zion Gem. By unlocking the gem, however, Desta inadvertently awakens the Dark Hyena, who is hell-bent on finally acquiring the gem for his own malicious intentions.

Desta will have to master the powers of the Zion Gem in order to defeat the Dark Hyena, but to do so, he’ll first have to deal with the emotional scars from his past. Zion is a superhero coming of age story like no other. It asks the question: “How does one honor the legacy, hopes, and dreams of family, while trying to forge your own path in life?”
