Why can’t fairies have bantu knots? Why can’t unicorns have locs?” That’s the idea that motivated, Mom and Native Washingtonian, Njeri Santana- Carter to create a coloring and activity book for little girls, dubbed Everything is Magical.
Everything is Magical features 33 beautifully illustrated unicorns and fairies who all have natural hairstyles. This unique book also includes15 fun activities such as math puzzles and sudoku that promote positive self-image and self-acceptance. Everything Is Magical coloring book puts a fun, fresh spin on unicorns and fairies sporting locs bantu knots, afro puffs, curly hair and twist outs.
Far from the average coloring and activity book, Everything is Magical provides more than just fun and engagement. In fact, the book also promotes awareness through a mad lib on the Crown Act.
Like any new Author, Santana-Carter is excited about the launch of the coloring and activity book. When asked about the motivation for creating Everything is Magical, she explained: “The idea was sparked while planning a unicorn, butterfly tea party for my daughter’s 4-year-old birthday party. Seeing the girls playing around with wings on their back and their natural hair was my aha moment. Why can’t fairies have bantu knots? Why can’t unicorns have locs? I finally said they can and it’s important for all girls see themselves represented in fantasy.”
The feedback received during the pre-launch of the book, attests to the need for diversity and representation in coloring books. One parent summed up the overall impact of the book. She said: “My girls (ages 3.5 and 5) absolutely LOVE this activity/coloring book! This is exactly the representation that we need right now. This book is vibrant. The coloring and activities bring out the creativity in my girls. They see themselves in the pages of this activity book. The activity book is curated beautifully.”
