A serious zero-day security vulnerability that exists in the wild was recently discovered in Google’s popular browser Chrome, dubbed as CVE-2019-5786.

Staying ahead of the competition, PureVPN’s engineering team was swift to alert its users and bring it to the attention of Chrome users as they account for more than half of the world’s Internet traffic!

Appearance of a Zero-Day Vulnerability in Chrome

In simple terms, a zero-day vulnerability is a security loophole in software that hasn’t yet been disclosed to or patched by the vendor. The zero-day bug in Chrome was discovered on February 27, and is actively being exploited by hackers to pull off Remote Code Execution.

Google says details about the bug are going to be kept under wraps until a majority of Chrome users have installed the latest update.

They have also not revealed any information about the scale of the zero-day flaw, which involves a part of Chrome known as FileReader.

What Should Chrome Users Do?

Realizing that Chrome is the most used browser in the world, PureVPN was the first VPN provider to publish a blog post highlighting the zero-day vulnerability as well as steps to fix it.

Google had already released an update on March 1 to remediate the flaw in Chrome, so users should update their browser as soon as possible to stay protected.

Installing the newly released update is the only way to get rid of the bug. Once done, the Google Chrome Version should read 72.0.3626.121 or later.

How to Check Google Chrome Browser Version?

It’s a simple process, and takes the following easy steps:

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click the three dots on the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Now, select “About Chrome” from the Settings dropdown menu.
  4. If the browser is not updated, you can manually initiate the download.
