Splash Rite Swim School is announcing the first title of its water safety and pool adventure children’s book series, Pang The Penguin Presents The First Splish Splash, available in August 2021 at www.pangthepenguin.net.

Pang the Penguin is a water safety guru and friend of the characters in the story. Author Lotta D. Todd says the book tells the story of Langston, an African-American boy who goes swimming for the first time. It chronicles how he gets his swim trunks, goggles, and life vest for the first time.

The First Splish Splash is primarily for audiences ages 4-8, even though readers of all ages can learn and apply the information. Todd says the core message to kids is to stay safe in and around water.

Todd wrote the book based on her 20 years of experience as a swim instructor, lifeguard, and coach. She is also a Certified Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) and member of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and Drowning Prevention Coalition in Arizona. She volunteers for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, in addition to partnering with Pool Safely and several retailers in the Phoenix area to promote water safety awareness and swim lessons for everyone. She has taught 3,000 students.

“One of the most important rules is to never go swimming alone, because there’s no one there to help you if you find yourself in a situation,” she says, “Drownings are preventable, no one is drown-proof, and drowning does not discriminate, in that approximately ten drownings happen every day.”

“Statistically, African-Americans are five-and-a-half times more likely to drown,” she says, “which is higher than other nationalities. So, it’s important to raise water safety awareness for people of color in particular.” This is the reason Todd is promoting diversity throughout the story by featuring characters who are people of color.
