San Francisco, Laguna beach, CA (PRUnderground) August 15th, 2017
Brooks Street Books announces today the forthcoming publication of The Accidental Naturalist: Exploring the Flora and Fauna of San Francisco and Beyond, the second in a series of fine art scientific coloring books by author, illustrator and sustainability expert Jo Situ Allen. In partnership with Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA), an independent school in Lake Tahoe, Allen will be a featured artist and will launch her new book at Creating Equilibrium Conference’s Village Green Festival at Squaw Valley August 25-27.
In addition to launching her new book, Allen will also be speaking at the two-day conference, which will bring together leaders in education, business, environmental science, technology, public policy and the arts. She will lecture alongside other notable industry specialists including New York Times bestselling author Steven Kotler, bio-futurist Andrew Hessel, and McArthur Genius Grant winner Patricia Wright. Together they will share insight and discuss new approaches to solving critical environmental issues.
“I have been drawing for most of my life,” says Allen, “but I’m especially excited to share this new book because it combines the two things I’m most passionate about nature and art. In this series, I focused on the California Floristic Province, including the coastal sand dunes and marshes of the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Nevada Mountains around Lake Tahoe, and the old growth redwood forests of Humboldt County.”
On Sunday, August 27th 2 pm, Allen will host a “Fireside” discussion with TEA students about endangered species, ecology, and her new book. Immediately following, she will be available to meet conference attendees and sign copies of The Accidental Naturalist: SF, which will be available for purchase at the TEA booth.

About Brooks Street Books is an independent publisher based in Laguna Beach, offering art and gift books with a regional focus. Founder Sarah Koops Vanderveen says, “At Brooks Street Books, we are inspired by the natural beauty of our community, and by the creativity of the many artists and writers who live and work here. As we expand our offerings and broaden the scope of the works that we publish, we remain committed to the idea that places have power, and there’s poetry to be found even in the daily details of life. To paraphrase Rumi, Beauty surrounds us; but we usually need to be walking in a garden (or on a beach!) to know it.”
