According to statistics released in 2018 by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison, minorities are only depicted in a small fraction of books. For instance, 10% of books feature African and African American characters. One author and mom, Tanelia Major, has set out to provide readers with a fun, safe, and diverse series of children’s books designed to take readers on great adventures.
Major’s two youngest daughters, Kylie (“Ky”) and Ryan (“Ry”) were her original inspiration for the Ky & Ry book series. According to Major, she hoped that she could memorialize the time in her girls’ lives where their imaginations are taking them on amazing adventures, and she decided to do this through stories that also teach lessons in patience, respect, kindness, and other important values. The Adventures of Ky & Ry was born.
The first book in the series recently made its official debut. “The Adventures of Ky & Ry: A Trip to the Zoo & a Safari Too” teaches patience as Ky and Ry go to the zoo and await Ky’s favorite animal, the giraffe. To pass time before they can see the giraffe, they embark on a magical adventure on an African safari. On their safari, the sisters see beautiful creatures such as elephants and lions, but the suspense of waiting to see the giraffe exposes Ky’s impatience. Readers have to continue to read to find out if Ky can wait while also enjoying her adventure.
It’s through stories such as “The Adventures of Ky & Ry: A Trip to the Zoo & a Safari Too” that Major hopes to help others embrace diversity while also giving kids of diversity a wonderful book series to cherish. Major looks forward to adding exciting new books to the series in the coming months.
